Hey y’all!!!
The first blog post of the year was going to be about beauty or fashion, but at the last minute I deceived to make the post about our New Year meal. After having a conversation with GG (please see “Chivalry Isn’t Dead” blog post about Gentle Giant). 😉
If you guys didn’t know I am a Texas girl through & through, I was raised in a small town in East Texas where tradition, religion & family are very important. So GG & I were talking about New Year meal traditions & I received this blank stare from him. GG is from the Midwest & a first generation American, so there are many things about our upbringing & traditions that are different.
So I start telling him about what my family eats to celebrate the New Year & the symbolism behind it to quickly discover he does not do the same. After this conversation I decided to change my first blog post of 2019. I am not one to talk about food, because my eating habits are a bit different since having a Lapband 2007 & Gastric Sleeve 2014 (hence the small plate of food above). Weight loss surgery blog posts are forthcoming!
Southern New Year Food –
· Pork (we prefer ham) – Symbolizes prosperity & moving ahead into the new year
· Black-Eyed Peas – Symbolizes luck
· Greens (most popular are collards, mustard greens, turnip greens & cabbage) – Represent wealth & money
Growing up I knew this was the first major meal of the new year, but I didn’t really understand why. Well I understood, but as you know kids usually just follow their parents or elders lead. After becoming an adult I became fully aware of WHY we were eating certain foods. I love meeting & discussing culture differences with people. I feel like it helps you become more self-aware & it’s good to expose yourself & vice versa to different traditions. People tend to fear what they don’t know or understand.
Wishing you all peace, blessings & prosperity in the NEW YEAR!!!
This was my first post across all social media platforms as well. I went into more detail in my Instagram stories. Y’all be sure & follow along on IG for all of the daily adventures!!!
